Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup milk (or non-dairy milk)
  • Black and orange food coloring
  • Edible decorations (like googly eyes, sprinkles, and fondant)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Line your muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  5. Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the milk to the butter mixture.
  8. Divide the batter into two bowls and add food coloring.
  9. Scoop the batter into the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  10. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  12. Get your frosting ready for decorating!
